With Bridges of Hope for a City Girl Child, we can give girls in Kampala, Uganda the tools they need to transform their city, “where women and girls are able to move around freely without the fear of harassment and violence at all times and enjoys what the city has to offer”.
Violence and harassment against girls are common in Kampala, and sometimes turn into assault. Young women and girls are afraid to speak up or report crimes. Girls often take precautions in their daily lives to protect themselves from violence. Like avoiding dark areas, keeping away from certain places (like taxi parks) or carrying something that can be used as a weapon.
It is not only violence/harassment, but also the fear, that impedes girls’ “right to the city”. Unfortunately, acts such sexual harassment are normalized as harmless “eve teasing” yet they contribute to girl’s unsafety. For example 45% of the girls in Kampala reported being sexually harassed using public transport. We are here to amplify the girls voices because they matter.
